Bishop, who founded Boot Camp for New Dads in 1990 and has helped to prepare more than 200,000 men for fatherhood over the years, offers important advice from his second book, Crash Course for New Dads: Tools, Checklists and Cheat Sheets on how to support a mom-to-be:

Communicate. Make it a point to talk to each other about your thoughts, concerns about the new baby and plans for the future. Even if mom seems to be handling pregnancy well, talking about what is happening now and in the future is the best way for you to prepare to be a family.

Get moving. Forego sitting around watching television. Take walks together. Not only will this physically benefit the both of you, it will also open the lines of communication.

Show her you care. Pregnancy is the time to take it up a notch and get even more creative in showing her how much you care about her and the baby. For example, if she has a craving for ice cream, call her from the ice cream store and read her the flavors. Paint the nursery with rainbows. You get the idea.

Help her cope. Moms-to-be will experience countless physical and emotional changes. You can help her through this by becoming more knowledgeable about her symptoms. Take the initiative and read some of her favorite pregnancy books. If she doesn’t have any books yet, be a hero and make the trip to the bookstore or library and ask the staff for recommendations.

Let her lean on you. The physical and emotional impacts of pregnancy may be intense and she is going to depend on you to help her get through the roughest times. From cravings to morning sickness, intense backaches and more, she’ll benefit from you comforting her and helping her to hold it all together.

Accompany her to the doctor. This is the single most important thing you can do during pregnancy, as visits with the obstetrician get you personally connected with what’s going on with mom and your baby. Keep the focus on mom and make sure she is getting all her questions answered.

“Every mom-to-be will experience a unique rollercoaster of physical and emotional changes. Dads have the important job of taking care of mom before, during and after the birth of their child,” explained Bishop. “During pregnancy, dads tend to serve as the ‘punching bag’ for all moms’ frustrations. Be patient and understanding. Don’t get drawn into arguments and try to show her the lighter side of things. Laughter can relieve a lot of stress.”

Bishop’s first book, Hit the Ground Crawling, is focused on work balance; being a dad and caring for mom. Both books are available online at www.DadsAdventure.com.

New Dads Learn What to Expect at Boot Camp Workshops

Dads-to-be will be better equipped to face the challenges and opportunities of fatherhood after attending a Boot Camp “hands on” educational workshop. Men attend the class when they are expecting their first baby, and are joined in the workshop by “veterans” who had previously attended and have returned with their two to four-month-old baby in tow. They are able to give the dads-to-be a realistic idea of what to do and what to expect when their first baby comes.

Boot Camp for New Dads

Now celebrating their 18th year, Boot Camp for New Dads is nationally acclaimed as the “Best Practice” for preparing men to be fathers and has been named a U.S. Navy Model Program. Boot Camp for New Dads has prepared more than 200,000 men for fatherhood over the years.

With more than 4.1 million births last year alone (National Center for Health Statistics), and approximately 1.5 million men becoming new dads every year, it’s more important than ever for fathers to realize that being a “good provider” is only part of the very central role they have in their children’s lives.

Greg Bishop, founder of Boot Camp for New Dads, a non-profit orientation program for fathers-to-be, operating in more than 260 hospitals, clinics, schools, fire stations and churches around North America and internationally, and author of two books on fathering, provides new fathers with tips for spending at least a few hours a week with their baby.

Bishop offers strategies from the more than 200,000 new dads that have gone through Boot Camp in his second book, Crash Course for New Dads: Tools, Checklists and Cheat Sheets on how dads can spend time with their babies even though they work long hours or frequently travel away from home:

· Do everything you can to make sure you are there for your baby’s birth.

· Change that first diaper. Make the time you do have with your baby count as much as possible. Set the tone that you are here to be a player and get involved early.

· Strive for solutions that enable you to spend time with your child. Figure out how to work from home if possible, even if it is just once a week.

· When you are home, make sure you spend time alone with your baby. Don’t let your limited experience caring for your baby limit you. Send mom out for an afternoon and just do it.

· Play with your baby before you leave in the morning and just after you get home. Many dads report that their babies sleep longer if they play with them at night.

· Keep your baby’s picture where you’ll see it often and keep him/her in mind.

· Call mom and catch up on your baby’s antics of the day.

· Use technology! Have mom hold the phone to your baby’s ear so you can talk to him/her. Ask her to send pictures to your cell phone or email.

· Be really creative. A young father who was deployed to Iraq recorded himself singing a dozen nursery rhymes which his wife plays for their baby every day so that their baby will recognize dad’s voice when he returns.

“Today’s economic realities create difficult circumstances. Many careers demand long work hours; your new baby will add to your financial requirements and your mate is going to be out of commission as an income generator for at least a little while,” explained Bishop. “Yes, it’s going to be an ongoing challenge, but if fathers work at spending time with their baby, it’s the most rewarding challenge they will ever take on.”

Bishop’s first book, Hit the Ground Crawling, covers work balance, being a dad, caring for a new mom and much more. Both books are available online at www.DadsAdventure.com.

DATELINE:  IRVINE, CA Every year, infant formula is one of the most shoplifted items throughout the country.  This brings into focus a problem faced by increasing numbers of families with a new baby as the economy tanks.

Parents of new babies who wondered â??how am I going to afford thisâ? before their baby arrived, are now losing part or all of their income and/or home. Now what? Thereâ??s no real answer for them, other than cutting back and trying to replace the lost income. If they donâ??t have luck with replacing that income, things can get steadily worse.  With a baby screaming due to hunger and no money to pay for infant formula (which runs $50 per week), the temptation for a father to steal it from the local market is understandable.  Yet, it is not an option.  Dad being arrested for shoplifting will only add to the economic nightmare for a young family.Â

According to Greg Bishop, founder of Boot Camp for New Dads, a non-profit orientation program for fathers-to-be, operating in more than 260 hospitals, clinics, schools, fire stations and churches around North America and internationally, and author of two books on fathering, there are alternatives available for feeding baby and family.

Bishop explained, â??Every community has a â??safety netâ?? for families falling off the economic ladder and they generally give priority to children. Dad will need to learn how to navigate this network, which can be very frustrating, particularly now when there is growing competition for limited resources and each community has a unique arrangement of resources and organizations involved.â?

But, assistance is out there. Â Boot Camp for New Dads provides some basic guidelines to follow:

·     Look for support early when it becomes apparent you may need it.  There may be waiting lists, or an eligibility period, etc. Connect with the local information and referral system.  Donâ??t know where to start?  Ask at a church, county welfare, a senior citizen center or food bank.

·     Start with a local food bank to supplement your familyâ??s meal costs.  They can also provide a wealth of information (talk to others in line and staff as well) for anyone accessing the â??safety-netâ? for the first time.

·     Check into your familyâ??s eligibility for food stamps.  The national program through the U.S. Department of Agricultureâ??s Food and Nutrition Service is now known as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).  The SNAP program provides families with an electronic card, similar to an ATM card which may be used for groceries.  In general, families with an income of less than $2000 per month for a family of four are eligible.  (Visit www.fns.usda.gov/FSP)

·     Housing is tough due to limited resources.  Homeless shelters can be a temporary fix, but they are not set up for families.  Subsidized housing may be an option that is available to you and your family, but waiting lists are involved, so investigate this option as soon as you know you may need it.

·     You may be eligible for help with your utility bills, especially heating oil.  Check with your local referral system.

·     Temporary income assistance may also be available from your county welfare office.

·     If you lose your health insurance, check out local health clinics for the uninsured for both treatment and information on insurance alternatives (like Medicaid for your child).

·     Look for odd jobs to pay something.Â

Bishop continued, â??When times are tough, the man who does whatever is necessary, in an honest way, to take care of his family, is a man in its truest sense.â?

Tips, Advice, Instructions and more

DATELINE: IRVINE, CA…

Below, Bishop shares the “19 Essential Items” that are listed in his most recent book Crash Course for New Dads: Tools, Checklists and Cheat Sheets:

A folder containing important documents including insurance cards, pre-admission forms, birth plan (two or three copies), etc.

Baby book (many nurseries will put your baby’s footprint in the book).

A watch with a second hand or digital readout.

Change of clothes and pajamas for mom (and dad, if staying overnight)

Warm shirt because hospital rooms are kept cool.

Basic toiletries such as a toothbrush, shaver, shampoo and deodorant.

Comfortable shoes, as you may do a lot of walking.

Something to read to mom.

CD, iPod or other music player with mom’s favorite music.

Pain-easing tools recommended at your birthing classes such as tennis balls, hot or cold packs, massagers, lotion, etc.

A bathing suit for dad to help mom take a shower which eases labor pains.

Something to eat and drink such as sandwich or power bars and juice, in a small cooler. Pack snacks for both of you for after the birth.

Cash to have on hand.

Pen and pad of paper.

Camera (photos and/or video), with extra film, battery, etc.

Address book and/or a list of phone numbers to announce birth.

Cell phone or calling card.

Champagne to celebrate. (Put your name on it and ask a nurse to store it in the fridge.)

Childbirth Coaching Guide from Crash Course for New Dads.

According to Bishop, “When you’re trying to get out the door and to the hospital, it’s guaranteed that you’ll forget one or more important items. Being prepared ahead of time is half the battle. In addition to considering our list of 19 Essential Items, expectant parents should talk to staff at the hospital; other attendees in birthing classes or someone they know who recently delivered a baby to get even more ideas for their list. Time is of the essence and you don’t want to have to drop mom at the hospital then rush back home to retrieve insurance papers or something else you must have. Every moment counts.”

Tips, Advice, Instructions and more

Greg Bishop offers strategies from more than 200,000 new dads that have gone through the Boot Camp for New Dads program in his second book, Crash Course for New Dads: Tools, Checklists and Cheat Sheets. His first book, Hit the Ground Crawling, covers work balance, being a dad, caring for a new mom and much more.

For many men attending, it’s their first time holding a baby.

With more than 4.1 million births (National Center for Health Statistics), and approximately 1.5 million men becoming new dads every year, it’s more important than ever for fathers to realize that being a “good provider” is only part of the very central role they have in their children’s lives.

Boot Camp for New Dads coach’s role is central to important issues regarding the return of veteran dads to the program, excellent outcomes for rookie dads and general excitement about the program within communities. Certified coaches are the key component of effective Boot Camp workshops nationwide.

The cutting edge two-day event is led by three Boot Camp National Trainers with over 25 years of combined experience leading Boot Camp workshops across the United Sates and England.

For more information, visit www.bootcampfornewdads.org/master-coach-training.php or contact Boot Camp for New Dads headquarters directly at (949) 754-9067.

According to Greg Bishop, founder of Boot Camp for New Dads and author of two books on fathering. “The key to improving the quality of life for many young children lies in helping fathers be more capable and confident. It is through the significant efforts of our dedicated coaches that we have the pleasure of helping dads from all walks of life across the nation in our Boot Camp programs.”

He continued, “Research has indicated that children whose fathers are a consistent, positive force in their lives do better socially, intellectually and in a broad range of other factors. Many new dads are willing to go the distance for their babies, but are unsure of where to start, what to do and how to care for their babies. Boot Camp for New Dads programs, led by certified coaches and veteran dads, gets new fathers off to a great start.”

â??Most fathers believe the less complicated, the better. Guys arenâ??t really interested in spending a lot of money on Fatherâ??s Day in general so oftentimes, they choose activities that are outdoors and free,â? noted Bishop.

Â

Dads across the nation have shared their ideas for celebrating Fatherâ??s Day:

Â

Take in a minor league baseball game.

No need for clubs or a golf cart – go Miniature Golfing.

Fire up the grill and give dad the spatula â?? a cookout with all dadâ??s favorite foods is just the thing.

Play Wiffle ball or get a backyard football game going.

Plan a picnic at the park or the beach. Be sure to bring baseball gloves and ball, Frisbee or football.

Take a family bike ride around the neighborhood or head for the nearest state park or trail.

Pack up the gear, some special snacks and go hiking.

Head for the nearest river or lake and go canoeing or boating. Or, watch the â??big boatsâ? while you stroll the ocean waterfront and enjoy ice cream.

Going bananas? Check out the monkeys and other exhibits at your local zoo.

Have a pizza party â?? order in or gather together and make it from scratch. Follow it up with (age appropriate) games like charades, Monopoly, Go Fish, etc.

Take in a show. It could be the newest movie in the theaters or a concert or an auto, boat or monster truck show â?? whatever dad enjoys.

Â

Bishop continued, â??Gifts are nice but simply spending time together as a family is what many dads want on Fatherâ??s Day.â?

Â
