And why is it that no one ever talks about the fact that he sent the military into Annapolis to depose the duly elected government of Maryland. He arrested the legislature. That is the kind of thing Hitler would do.
And why does no one talk about the journalists he arrested.
I will give Lincoln credit, he knew that punishing the South would have a negative effect, unfortunately his party didn't listen to him.
So, what I must know is, why do people give him such hero worship when he was clearly a tyrant
The problem lies in the post war period. Exactly how many soldiers were actually willing to fight for or against slavery? Most folks in the South could not even afford one slave and were not interesting to fit a war simply so that those who could afford slaves could keep them. And most soldiers in the North didn’t go to war with the intention of freeing the slaves, they went to preserve the union. But the abolitionists got the last laugh after the war by claiming the war was all about slavery, which is quite sadly what tends to be taught today in schools. And the abolitionists claim Lincoln wrote the Emancipation to free the slaves, conveniently ignoring the fact that during the war not only did the Emancipation not have any effect in those areas in open rebellion which it targeted (it was supposed to take effect in those areas of the South conquered by Union forces but only did when the commanding general was actually willing to enforce it), but it never targeted the Union boarder states, all of which were slave states.
Good questions, I do believe he was just trying to keep this country from splitting of in two different direction.
Probably for the same reasons that people say the South “fought for States Rights and not slavery.”
The Emancipation Proclamation was an effective war measures act.
Lincoln was not beyond allowing loyal States to dispose of slavery in their own way and on their own time.
There is absolutely no comparison between what Hitler did and what Lincoln did.
The South too arrested journalists, this was common North and South since all journalists were suspected of being spies and printing information about the enemy’s troop movements in their newspapers.
People praise Lincoln, and not worship, for his wise direction of a nation undergoing a long and bloody civil war. You may want to ask why no one worships Jefferson Davis, and what quotes of his people have remembered.
There is never an easy answer to adult questions and no true answer begins with “clearly.” Lincoln’s main purpose when he took office was to preserve the Union, end of story. If that meant keeping the institution of slavery, so be it.
When rebels attacked Fort Sumter it began a total war scenario that nearly destroyed the country. The proximity of Washington DC prevented any compromise proposal to allow a peaceful settlement. Did Lincoln suspend habeus corpus? yes. But did he stand for election, one that he was prepared to lose? yes. He was no tyrant.
To your question why didn’t the proclamation apply to Maryland, Kentucky, Delaware, DC, because they did not rebel and as a tactical matter the proclamation denied a resource of labor to the enemy. That he suspended the Maryland legislature, they were about to rebel. The reporters, that would have been a violation of habeus, which was suspended during the war.
And remember that the south lost and because treason is one of the few crimes in the constitution, technically every southerner could have been executed as traitors. Finally Lincoln is an American hero because this is America, and this is the country he defended.
