Is Oversensitivity Becoming The Norm?

By Rob
Arraynot found. The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday served fried chicken, greens and cornbread in the mid-shipmen's dining hall. On Tuesday, the academy served those items, along with mashed potatoes, pie and lemonade as clips of King's speeches were broa
dcast in King Hall (named after an academy grad). There were no classes on Monday since it was a holiday, so the meal was served on Tuesday. Several class members complained about 'racial insensitivity.' HOWEVER, during Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month and St. Patrick's Day no complaints were lodged when cultural foods were served. A Navy Commander at the academny said that it's a traditional Southern meal . (Throughout the Navy's fleet, special meals are served on special occaisions. Speaking from experience, myself.) Oh, by the way, the meal was planned by the academny's director of food service who is black. (USN, retired)

Yes oversensitivity is the norm. It’s been instilled in people. EVERYONE wants to be a victim.
It’s disgusting to think a traditional Southern meal (and Dr. King was very much a Southerner–might still be alive today if he’d taken an easier road up north) is the cause of a complaint about racism. Fool(s) need to realize what ACTUAL racism is–when a black couldn’t go into any restaurant and order a meal (or a cup of coffee). THAT is racism.
All the poor academy’s director will hear is that he’s an “Uncle Tom” or something else equally stupid.
It’s like the recent unwarranted flap about the Chinese artist selected to do the statue of Dr. King.
The professional victims can’t even think straight anymore:
“In response, the NAACP issued a statement calling the use of a Chinese sculptor an attempt to outsource “the production of the monument to Dr. King to the People’s Republic of China, the country with the worst record of human rights violations and civil rights abuses in the world.” The NAACP feels that it is more appropriate that the sculpture to be completed by an African-American artist.
Artist Gilbert Young, who created a site (www.kingisours.com) protesting Yixin’s contract also criticizes the Memorial Project’s decision. Like the NAACP, Young complains that America is unrightfully outsourcing the production of the project.
“Among those pretending to be in charge are obviously too many who cannot see the irony of this decision,” Young states in a co-written essay online.”http://www.pbs.org/newshour/extra/speako…
The IRONY of the Chinese artist being selected? There is NO irony in that at all. The “irony” is in a bunch of blacks deciding that a man’s COUNTRY and his “ethnicity” should DISQUALIFY him when the issue is ARTISTIC TALENT. There is racism in Young’s WHINING. After all there were blacks on the selection committee–at least they were NOT racists and they looked at what Dr. King WOULD have looked at: the product.
Shame, shame, SHAME on these bigots and their interminable whining. There is STILL real racism out there, but when that gets reported people are so used to hearing the PC BS whine that they don’t always hear the REAL thing because it’s drowned out with sheer BS.

it is getting out of control with all this hurt feelings. I feel the Navy does a wonderful job with the meals for the servicemen and for those special events.

Oversensitivity is the norm. It has gotten to the point I cannot keep up with what is or is not politically correct anymore.
Take Black people for instance. I have called them Colored, ******, and Black all for the sake of not offending.

I think we have went completely overboard with sensitivity. I can’t even write anymore because I am angry at all the ways that people seem to take offense anymore. At some point you have to say STOP.

had that meal not been served there would have been just as much of an uproar. We (as a nation) are turning into a bunch of big dang babies.

it seems these days you can’t say or do anything right…such a shame, because this country was built on freedoms. not that i want to hear every nonsensical thing that someone wants to say, but some of us keep quiet more and more just to avoid having to defend our beliefs.
it seems a shame that ppl can’t celebrate the life of MLK Jr. with a simple meal without someone else being “offended.”

Yes, American Pat., you are quite right. I asked a question earlier that, apparently, had sexist connotations. One woman answered and gently admonished me for asking a question that could be considered exclusive of women, and gave a little reminder that women could have been included. Another woman was just downright “pee’d off”, to say the least. The question, I thought, in my uninformed male ignorance, was quite innocent and could never be considered anything other than a simple question about young boys’ childhood days.
By the way, American, its OK to ride a Honda Goldwing. No problemo. Take it to Sturgis sometime, maybe I’ll see ya there. Or, maybe not. Since I’m now 64, maybe last summer was my last trip to that great event. (64, but 30+ years of riding is still a great kick, Man. Part of the kick is seeing the looks of disbelief on faces of people, young and old; especially the young; when they see an ugly old man with blown back, bulging grey hair, white beard, and missing front teeth riding on a noisey Harley Davidson) – - I smiles at em, I ain’t gonna have my dentures blown out while cruising down a hiway. “Look at the old man on the motorcycle, with his old lady on the back”, I’m sure they say, “that’s just not right”. But, maybe they don’t say anything.

How I miss the old golden days……People are way to worried about things, too much race this and race that…..get over it – we are all human and that is that. The meal is a traditional southern meal and what was the problem. They should be honored that theis occured not annoyed. History is important….however, I do not agree with all these day off school and work.

The hardest part is no matter what you do it’s wrong. It’s not like fried chicken is just an African American meal. If they served something really different they’d be complaining about not respecting their “culture” or some other thing. I have been surprised about this thing with the noose being a racial symbol……since when? Like it was a horrible device set up to hang only blacks in days gone by? I think anyone facing death with hanging wasn’t too thrilled about the symbolism of it all…..but it definitely isn’t and never was just a “black” thing. I’d be upset if one was hanging on my office door because it is a threat period. I don’t think any other race would see it as a positive sign either. But to make “more” is going off the deep end…….like they are all so ultra sensative and everyone else isn’t bothered at all. Please.
I mean ANYONE can find something to get offended by if you look long and hard enough and are waiting for every chance to pick someone apart. Like nobody else had problems, difficult times….bad memories…..get over it already. As my Dad used to say….grow some thick skin….the worlds a hard place to live in.
I think I should call Comcast and complain about the “Slowskies”…..you know the polish turtles who prefere the slow internet. Haven’t Polish people gone through enough ribbing for decades and decades? I’m “offended”. LOL Then….the new diet pill commercial…..fat guy, fat woman….they diet….he gets skinny and all that happens to her is her boobs shrink……I’m a woman….haven’t we historically suffered enough with this boob fetish? LOL It degrades women….blah, blah, blah….or just have a laugh. I mean there’s times to say something and then there’s times to just get over it. Heck….if we were all that “sensative” we’d never leave the house.
