Assateague Island, Maryland is most known for the more than 300 wild ponies who wander the beaches. Since this is a national park, camping is allowed but you’ll have to drive to nearby Ocean City, Maryland or Chincoteague Island, Virginia to find hotel accommodations.

Annapolis has a nice old town/harbor. Good for an evening but it’s not a beach. There’s a beach nearby right next to the Chesapeake Bay bridge, Sandy Point park. But I heard that it was just closed for swimming by the state because the water was so nasty.
The beaches on the ocean are a better choice. There’s a long strip of beaches that run from Lewes Deleware down to Ocean City, MD. Which is best depends on what you like, The Cape Henlopen state part is the Lewes end, not built up at all can you can even drive on the beach. That’s one extreme, the other is Ocean City, which has a long boardwalk and amusement parks.
I’d suggest something in between, like Bethany Beach, DE or Rehoboth, DE.
These places are not far from each other. You can stay in one place and quickly drive to the others to explore.
